Hotter Than Blazes

You know those summer days – the ones that are hotter than blazes. The heat and humidity make your hair droop as soon as you walk out the door. It’s the kind of weather you love or hate, but have to find ways to adapt to. There are many ways to make sure you stay as comfortable as possible and it’s important to make appropriate plans for your furry friends, too.

Safety for Sizzling Summer Days

Enjoying summer days with your pet bestie is…well…the best! Whether you’re taking a walk, a hike, a swim, are out on a boat, or at a backyard barbeque, summer is a great time to make memories with your family and friends, including the furry ones. Pets need extra TLC during hot weather because they’re at high risk for heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Unlike humans, pets do not sweat through their skin. They primarily cool off by panting and through limited sweating via their paw pads, which makes it challenging for them to regulate their body temperature in extreme heat.

Heatstroke

Certain pets are at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses or even heatstroke. Pets who have thick fur, flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, elderly animals, and those with health conditions are especially vulnerable. Recognizing the signs of heat-related distress in pets is crucial. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Labored breathing
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Vomiting
  • Anxiety

If you notice these signs, it’s important to take immediate action to cool your pet down. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, act quickly by:

  • Moving them to a cooler area
  • Offering small amounts of water
  • Using a damp cloth to cool them down
  • Avoid using ice-cold water or ice packs, as rapid cooling can be harmful

If you suspect heatstroke, you should contact your veterinarian immediately for further guidance.

Other Summer Safety Concerns

While heat-related illnesses are of great concern for pets during the hottest months of the year, there are other summer safety tips to keep in mind, too. It’s important to:

  • Avoid dehydration by ensuring that your pet always has plenty of fresh clean water available
  • Make sure that pavement or asphalt isn’t too hot for your pet to walk on safely
  • Protect your pet from parasites with preventative treatment options
  • If your pet is swimming with you, make sure they know how to swim
  • Provide them with clean drinking water at a lake or pool
  • Keep unscreened windows and doors closed so your pet doesn’t run away
  • Avoid exposing your pet to an area of your yard that has been treated with fertilizer or insecticides
  • Educate yourself about which flowers or garden plants are dangerous to your pet

Avoiding Summer Mishaps

The best way to avoid a summer pet mishap or emergency is through prevention. South Hyland Pet Hospital in Minneapolis, MN recommends that you:

  • Provide ample water and shade
  • Avoid the midday sun
  • Use cooling aids like a cooling mat or vest
  • Keep your pet’s fur trimmed (but don’t shave them)
  • Adjust your pet’s exercise routine by opting for shorter, more frequent play sessions
