Dr. Nikki Burk

Education: University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine

Pets: Zora & Zeus (Chocolate Labradors), Gidget (Pug)

Dr. Nikki Burk attended Iowa State University, then the University of Minnesota where she received a B.S. degree in Veterinary Science. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. As an undergraduate and as a veterinary student, Dr. Burk excelled academically. During her undergraduate years, she was involved in the honors program, was on the Dean’s List, and was part of Iowa State’s Presidential Leadership group. While in veterinary school, she was inducted into Phi Zeta Kappa (Veterinary Medical Honors Society) and received the World Animal Care Foundation Award.

Dr. Burk is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Dental Society, the American Association of Feline Practitioners, and the American Heartworm Society.  Dr. Burk is a co-owner of South Hyland Pet Hospital. Dr. Burk maintains membership in the James O. Hansen Academy, by completion of at least five times the state requirement for continuing education to maintain her veterinary license. Her passion for learning has allowed her to develop professional interests in addition to canine and feline medicine and surgery, such as advanced pet dentistry, small exotic pet medicine, and laser surgery. She also especially enjoys building relationships with her clients and patients so that she can provide the best possible care. She has special interest and experience in brachycephalic dog breeds (pugs, Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs, etc.), sporting dogs and hedgehogs. She accepts dental referrals from other local veterinarians as well to treat complex dental cases, and assists the faculty in teaching dentistry laboratories at the University of Minnesota for veterinary students. She enjoys mentoring and interacting with veterinary and pre-veterinary students.  Dr. Burk serves on the committee for admission into veterinary school at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Burk embraces the Fear Free approach to veterinary care, and uses gentle patient handling and lots of treats to encourage a comfortable experience for each pet’s visit.

Dr. Burk and her husband, Joe, and sons Izaak and Ethan share their home with two Chocolate Labradors named Zora and Zeus and a Pug named Gidget. Her hobbies include traveling and reading.

Dr. Mark Lehnert

Pets: Peanut (Pomeranian) and Sawyer (Labrador)

Dr. Mark Lehnert attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology in 1993. He then attended Utah State University, where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Biology.

Dr. Lehnert worked as a wildlife biologist in upstate New York for two years prior to returning to Minnesota and entering the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine. As a veterinary student, he received several academic awards and scholarships. Dr. Lehnert was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and has since developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. He has received advanced training in performing surgical tooth extractions, root canals, vital pulpotomies and other dental procedures. Dr. Lehnert is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Dental Society.  Dr. Lehnert became co-owner of South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2012.

Dr. Lehnert, his wife Sarah and their daughters, Audrey, Evelyn and Corinne have a Pomeranian named Peanut, and a Labrador named Sawyer.  Dr. Lehnert’s outside hobbies and activities include photography, camping, canoeing, hunting and competing in triathlons.

An associate veterinarian at South Hyland Pet Hospital since 1995, Dr. Vicki Schulz attended the University of Minnesota where she was awarded her B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1983. She graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul in 1988. Previous to her acceptance into veterinary school, Dr. Schulz was a veterinary technician employed for 2 years at an equine hospital. 

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the Association of Avian Veterinarians and the American Animal Hospital Association. Dr. Schulz enjoys traveling to other states to get continuing education and is a member of Vetgirl. She also is a member of the James O. Hanson Academy for continuing education. Medicine and quality of life have been of great interest along with avian and small mammal diseases and care.

Dr. Schulz lives with her husband Pete and occasionally gets to enjoy her 2 college age sons Brandon and Derek. She also is the medical director of ACT V Rescue and Rehabilitation since 2008. In her spare time she travels to reservations and Puerto Rico to assist in animal care. Gardening has also been a passion of hers along with riding horses.

After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, Dr. Rachel Samsel attended the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine where she was awarded her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Working in the animal related field since 1995, Dr. Samsel joined South Hyland Pet Hospital as a part time veterinarian in 2006. In addition to being a general veterinary practitioner, Dr. Samsel has professional interests in dermatology.

Her husband, Eric, is a manager of Burnsville Toyota, and in their spare time they enjoy spending time with their dogs, reading, gardening, working on their home and visiting with family and friends. They share their home with Lily, a standard poodle and Sully, an English springer spaniel.

Dr. Hana Kazunas

Originally from Madison, WI, Dr. Hana Kazunas attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology in 2011. She worked at South Hyland Pet Hospital as a Client Service Representative for one year before beginning medical school. Dr. Kazunas graduated the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Pullman, WA on May 7, 2016 and joined our team on June 1st, 2016.

As a general practitioner, she looks forward to treating patients of a variety of species and has special interests in behavior and pain management strategies. Hana shares her home with her dog, Jordy (who was the first dog Hana spayed in veterinary school) and her cat, Karl (a former dumpster diving kitten). She enjoys horseback riding, baking, reading, cheering on the Green Bay Packers and spending time with family and friends.

Alexa graduated in September 2018 from Argosy University with her degree in veterinary technology. She completed her internship with us at South Hyland and has continued on as a Certified Veterinary Technician on our team. At South Hyland, Alexa loves to perform dental cleanings, lab work, and meeting all the furry and feathery faces. Her goal for the future is to specialize in dentistry. In Alexa’s free time she loves being outside, painting, and spending time with her family and friends. She has two kitties, Rajah and Luna, who are her fur babies.

Dawn, a certified veterinary technician, joined South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2006. Dawn attended the Medical Institute of Minnesota and received her veterinary technology degree in 2002.

Dawn enjoys spending time with her husband Zach, son Wyatt and daughters Kayla and Emily.  Her hobbies include swimming, reading, crafts and photography.  She shares her home with two cats named Tito and Spook.

Hannah joined South Hyland Pet Hospital in May 2017. She graduated from Argosy University with her degree in Veterinary Technology in October 2017 and passed her certification test to become a CVT. Hannah completed her technician internship with South Hyland, and stayed as a permanent member of the CVT team. Hannah has a Shih Tzu named Baker, and two fish tanks with South American Blood Parrots. She enjoys spending her time with her husband, friends, family & animals. She enjoys chinchillas, having owned one before, and enjoys caring for them as patients. In the clinic she also loves working in surgery, exotic medicine, and radiology.

Jessica joined the South Hyland team in January of 2013. She graduated from Argosy University in December of 2012, and also holds a degree in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. With a passion for wildlife and exotic medicine, Jessica completed her internship at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota in Roseville. Jessica shares her home with cats Zoey and Bibs, as well as Pebbles the rabbit. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching movies, spending time outdoors and attending sporting events.

KaNieshea started South Hyland Pet Hospital as a kennel assistant in May 2014. After graduating from the Minnesota School of Business and passing the Veterinary Technician Nation Examination, KaNieshea decided to stay at South Hyland Pet Hosptial as a CVT. KaNieshea quickly became enthralled with medical science and its evolving nature. KaNieshea’s special interest include: metabolic physiology, pharmacokinetics and neurology. KaNieshea plans to go back to school for her Pre-requisites, once complete, KaNieshea will be applying to veterinary school in order to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. In her free time KaNieshea likes to read (mostly earth science non-fiction), visit a variety of planetariums and museums and hang out with family and friends. KaNieshea shares her home with a bossy small man dog named Harlow.

Lisa, a Certified Veterinary Technician, started with South Hyland Pet Hospital in March of 2016. After graduating from Argosy University in 2009, she worked in emergency medicine, intensive care units and referral hospitals. Lisa has also worked in veterinary manufacturing of anesthesia and critical care products. Lisa loves the excitement of veterinary medicine and being able to work with all kinds of small animals.

She enjoys spending time with her husband Josh and their sons Roman and Jett. They have 2 dogs, Hank and Stella, a cat (Remi) and beta fish (Jeff). In their spare time they love to go fishing, bike riding to the park and spending time with family.

A certified veterinary technician, Mary graduated from Elk River High School then attended the Medical Institute of Minnesota where she was awarded her Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences in 2000.

Mary has been with South Hyland Pet Hospital since 1999. She is a member of the Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians. She is the lead CVT at South Hyland and is a member of the management team at the clinic.

Mary enjoys spending time with her husband and children. She also enjoys camping, reading, photography and traveling with her family. Their pets include two cats; Zoila and Quentin Purrantino, two boxers named Opie and Andre, and a tortoise named Puma.

Grace graduated in December 2018 from Argosy University with her degree in Veterinary Technology. She completed her internship with us at South Hyland and has continued on as a CVT. Grace enjoys running labwork, dentistry, and getting to know her patients. In her free time, Grace enjoys throwing pottery on the wheel, biking and crackin’ jokes. She has one cat named Poppy, who loves to play fetch.

Alisa joined South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2007 as a Client Services Representative.  For many years she worked in Strategic Branding and Design, but a job at South Hyland Pet Hospital provided the opportunity to follow her passion – working with animals.  In 2016, she graduated from The Academy for Dog Trainers with a Certificate of Training and Counseling (CTC).  The Academy’s program is one of the most rigorous and advanced programs for dog behavior and training in the world. Alisa is the co-owner of The Dog Evolved, a dog training company based in Bloomington.  The Dog Evolved takes a science based approach to training manners, solving behavior problems, and addressing fear and aggression.  They provide one-on-one training as well as group classes for dogs of any age.

Also, Alisa is co-founder of the 501(c) 3 animal rescue, ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation.  She dedicates a majority of her time outside of South Hyland Pet Hospital to The Dog Evolved and ACT V Rescue.  She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Ron and two rescue dogs: Tahla, a German Shepherd and Skye, an American Eskimo mix.

Paige became a team member in February 2017. Paige is a Pennsylvania native, and moved to Minnesota in 2017 with her boyfriend Tom. Tom is a curling enthusiast. He and Paige love living in this state. Paige and Tom are owned by two adorable Weimaraner dogs named Luna Blu and Kemah. Paige is a rock star at the practice, and works both as a Customer Service Representative at the front desk and a Veterinary Assistant in the back. She and Tom enjoy camping and traveling with Luna and Kemah. Paige is also an avid gardener.

Becci is from Wisconsin originally. She ventured to the twin cities in 2000 and started pursuing her career working with animals in 2004. In her free time she likes to go camping and fishing. She also likes to garden. She lives with her rescue dog Shy, a 2 year old German Shepherd mix and 2 rescue cats Toby and Ada.

A part-time receptionist at South Hyland Pet Hospital since 1998, Denise excels at making connections with our clients and patients, and getting to know the families we care for. Denise’s hobbies include gardening and cooking. Married to Greg, a landscape designer, they have one daughter named Erika.

As she is interested in Australian shepherds, she is also an active member of the Australian Shepherd Club of America.
