February is National Pet Dental Health Month, but taking care of your pet’s teeth shouldn’t just be a yearly event. Here at South Hyland Pet Hospital, we know that optimal dental health is essential to a happy and healthy pet. Let’s take a look at some tips for keeping your pet’s teeth clean all year round.
Getting Started on Brushing the Teeth of Your Pet
Brushing your pet’s teeth should become part of their daily routine. After all, you brush your own teeth at least one time per day, right? There are several different types of toothbrushes and toothpastes available that are specifically designed for pets. Be sure to use toothpaste that is safe for pets since human toothpaste contains ingredients that can make animals sick. And don’t forget about the yummy flavors! Pets love the taste of beef, chicken, or even seafood-flavored toothpaste, which makes it easier to get them into the habit of brushing their teeth every day.
Making Brushing Easier
If you have difficulty getting your pet to sit still while brushing their teeth, try giving them a treat after each session or rewarding them with praise and affection when they cooperate with you. Ultimately, remember that it might take some time and patience before your pet gets accustomed to having his or her mouth brushed. But once it becomes part of their routine, they will enjoy it.
Go in small steps – even if it just means holding the toothbrush up to their mouth, and rewarding them. Get them used to the feel of the toothbrush in their mouth, as well as the taste of the toothpaste. Gradually work up to brushing, and remember to provide a treat!
Annual Cleanings
In addition to regular brushings, schedule annual dental cleanings for your pet so that our veterinarians can clean below the gumline as well as check for any potential issues with their teeth or gums. This helps ensure that potential problems can be detected early on and treated before they become too serious. Regular cleanings are especially important for older pets who may be more prone to developing dental issues due to age-related medical conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes.
Keeping up with your pet’s dental health should be an ongoing effort throughout the year—not just during Pet Dental Health Month in February! By staying consistent with daily toothbrushing, using a safe and tasty (to them!) toothpaste, along with scheduling annual cleanings here at South Hyland Pet Hospital, you can ensure that your furry family member has strong and healthy pearly whites all year round! We hope these tips help you provide top-notch oral care for your beloved companion throughout 2023 and beyond!
