Over the last two years, COVID-19 has brought many challenges. The pandemic has changed our daily lives and changed the way we are able to interact with you and your pets. Our team at South Hyland Pet Hospital has worked tirelessly to adjust to the evolving protocols while continuing to provide patients with top-notch care. However, our team has also been fighting other challenges that are plaguing the veterinary industry. We would like to take this time to thank you for your patience and provide some insight into the many obstacles our team has been facing.

Understanding Compassion Fatigue

Our veterinary staff do what they do because of their love for animals. Unfortunately, this profession comes with its fair share of heartache. Our team deals with death and illness on a daily basis. We are often the bearers of bad news and are there to care for your pets on their worst days.

While we care deeply for our patients, the emotional stress of the veterinary profession can take its toll. This heavy emotional burden often results in compassion fatigue and is a growing problem in the veterinary industry. While we work diligently to support our team and combat the effects of compassion fatigue, the stresses of the pandemic have not made it easy.

The Impacts of COVID 19

Throughout the pandemic, our team has worked tirelessly to provide quality care for your pets while maintaining a safe environment for both our clients and staff. We have adjusted to curbside care, added video chat options, and implemented new clinic protocols based on the recommendations of top health authorities.

While we continue to fight compassion fatigue and burnout, veterinary hospitals have been busier than ever. According to a study conducted by the American Pet Products Association, approximately 12.6 million U.S. households welcomed a new pet in the first year of the pandemic. This significant increase in new pets has put considerable strain on the veterinary community as we work to provide quality care for this rapidly growing number of pets.

We Appreciate Your Patience

Despite the many challenges we have faced, the health of our patients remains our top priority. We understand that the many changes to our clinic protocols have had a significant impact on you and your pets. Our staff at South Hyland are immensely thankful for the patience you have shown us during this time. Your flexibility and understanding have not gone unnoticed. The kindness you show our team has meant the world to us and continues to motivate us during this difficult time.

What to Expect Moving Forward

As health protocols continue to evolve, we are doing our best to create a safe environment for our clients and staff. Our clinic protocols are based on recommendations from the CDC, Minnesota Department of Health, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. As these recommendations change, so may our clinic protocols. For updates on our protocols and mask policies, you can give us a call at 952-884-1868 or visit our COVID-19 information page.

We will continue to do our best to care for your pets and help our staff fight compassion fatigue. We appreciate your continued support and understanding.
