Are you considering a holiday photoshoot with your pet? Holiday pet photos can be a great way to include your pet in the holiday festivities and create a lasting keepsake. However, pet photoshoots can be a bit tricky. At South Hyland Pet Hospital, we want to make sure your holiday photos remain safe and fun for everyone involved. We hope these tips will help you capture the best holiday photos of your pet.

Making Sure Your Pet is Comfortable

Before you start snapping those photos, make sure your pet is comfortable. Let them sniff out their surroundings and get a good look at any props you want to use. If you are working with a professional camera, take a few test shots to help your pet get accustomed to the noise.

Avoid Dangerous Props

Have you ever seen the pictures of pets wrapped in holiday lights? While this may look cool, it can also be dangerous. Be thoughtful about the props you use in your photos. Avoid wrapping your pet in lights or tinsel. Also, be mindful of toxic plants such as holly and mistletoe.

Set up Your Space Ahead of Time

Setting the stage for a perfect holiday photo can take a little bit of time. Pets don’t usually have the patience to wait around while you make sure every last ornament is in place for the perfect photo. Plan to get your space ready before your photo session begins. Think about the poses and camera angles you want to get. Being prepared will ensure your pet spends less time waiting around and help the process go more smoothly.

Recruit a Helping Hand

Posing your pet and working the camera can be a lot to juggle. Consider asking a friend to lend a helping hand. One of you can focus on getting all the right camera angles, while the other one keeps your pet happy and entertained.

Since photo sessions can be a hectic time, it’s best to pick someone your pet is familiar with. Take some time at the beginning of the session to let your pet say hello and get acquainted with your extra set of hands. Not only will this help the process go smoother, but your photos will also likely turn out much better.

Timing is Everything

Be strategic about when you schedule your pet photoshoot. If your pet has a lot of built-up energy or is anxiously awaiting dinner, it can make it challenging to get them to focus on the camera. Make some time for a nice play session before you start taking photos. If you have a dog, consider taking them on a long walk earlier in the day. Letting your pet burn off some of that excess energy can make them more willing to sit still.

Additionally, try to avoid scheduling your photos right before mealtime. If your pet is preoccupied with their grumbling belly, they may be less willing to cooperate.

Have fun!

Holiday photos should be fun for everyone involved! We hope these tips will help you capture the perfect shot. If you have any questions about safety or your pet’s health, please give us a call at 952-884-1868.
