Summer is almost here, and we bet you and your fuzzy family are ready for some fun in the sun. But before you gear up for a fishing trip, hike, or even just some time in the garden, there are a few things we hope you will consider. Keeping your pet safe this summer is easy with our top safety tips for this carefree season.

1. Keep your pet hydrated.

One often overlooked danger that cats and dogs face during the summer heat is dehydration. Dogs tend to experience a greater thirst than we do. So, if you’re craving water, you can bet your best friend is, too. If your pet’s gums seem dry or pale, they may already be experiencing dehydration.

Be sure to provide your pet with plenty of sources for clean, cool, refreshing water. If you plan a hike or walk, bring along a collapsible bowl and water bottle.

2. Don’t Let Your Pet Overheat

Fact: Summer is hot. Both dogs and cats can succumb to heatstroke, which can be life-threatening. Keep your pet’s temperature in check by:

  • Avoiding walking your dog during the hottest times of day
  • Keeping your cat indoors
  • Provide a shaded place in the backyard so your pet can enjoy a respite from the sun
  • Never leave your pet in the car, even for short periods of time

If you notice your pet showing signs of heatstroke such as disorientation, lethargy, red and swollen gums, vomiting, excessive panting, or weak and wobbly legs, immediately remove them from the heat, place a damp towel around them, and give us a call.

3. Consider Sunblock

Many pet owners are surprised to learn that their pets can develop skin cancer from long-term sun exposure. To help protect your pet, use pet-friendly sunblock on their ears, nose, and anywhere on their back and tail where their coat is thin. Remember to reapply as needed and limit your pet’s time in the sun.

4. Paws for Foot Protection

Most pets don’t wear shoes… However, if your pet is willing to, you may want to let them. Hot walking surfaces scorch, burn, and blister your pet’s paw pads. If your pet won’t let you outfit them in the latest four-legged footwear, you will want to prevent them from walking on surfaces you cannot hold your hand flat on comfortably for 5 to 10 seconds.

When walking your pup, keep in mind that grass is always cooler than pavement and asphalt, and astroturf is one of the hottest walking surfaces you’ll find.

5. Fish for Fun, Don’t Let Your Pet Get Hooked

For those with a penchant for fishing, be sure you consider if you should bring your dog along before you leave home. While dogs can be great company in the outdoors, dogs and angling don’t always mix.

If you do take your dog shore-side fishing, always

  • Keep an eye on your dog before casting
  • Do not let your dog in the water when landing a fish
  • Bring along fresh water to discourage your dog from drinking the lake water
  • Provide a shady place for your dog to relax

If your dog (or cat) gets hooked, try to immobilize your pet and bring them in ASAP. You do not want your pet trying to remove the hook on their own–things can quickly get worse.
