Our Founder
South Hyland Pet Hospital was founded in 1974 by Dr. James A. Libby, a visionary leader in veterinary medicine. Dr. Libby earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1959. After several years in practice, he pursued a Master’s of Science degree from Ohio State University, graduating in 1965. His career in academia included roles as an instructor at Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine and an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. He also held a veterinary role with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for five years, where he contributed to the betterment of national veterinary standards.
Dr. Libby established South Hyland Pet Hospital at its current location, transforming it from a one-doctor practice into the multi-doctor facility it is today. His commitment to excellence secured the hospital’s certification from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a prestigious achievement that we proudly maintain, ensuring our clients and patients receive the highest standard of care. Driven by a passion for advanced medical practices, Dr. Libby became an early expert in veterinary dentistry in 1985, positioning South Hyland as a leader in dental care for our patients and referrals from other clinics. His progressive vision shaped the hospital’s foundation and culture of continuous advancement.
Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Libby received numerous honors, including recognition as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. He was awarded Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association’s (MVMA) Veterinarian of the Year in 1981 and received the MVMA President’s Award in 1995. Dr. Libby served on the MVMA board and as its president, and was an active member of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Foundation. His business excellence was also celebrated with the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Libby was deeply engaged in his community. He held leadership roles as president of both the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and the Bloomington Lions Club, and served on the Bloomington Education Foundation board. Appointed by the Governor to the Minnesota Health Advisory Committee, he also received the WCCO Good Neighbor Award for his service. Dr. Libby enjoyed golf, fishing, travel, and, above all, spending time with his family—his wife, Patricia, their three children, and seven grandchildren.
Dr. Libby retired from South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2004 but continued to stay connected with the clinic until his passing on January 8, 2010. We honor his legacy as a pioneer who set a high standard for veterinary medicine and community involvement. His vision and dedication are woven into the fabric of South Hyland Pet Hospital, and we remain committed to upholding the excellence he instilled.
