Dr. Nikki Burk
DVM, Hospital Owner/Medical Director

Dr. Nikki Burk attended Iowa State University, then the University of Minnesota where she received a B.S. degree in Veterinary Science. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. As an undergraduate and as a veterinary student, Dr. Burk excelled academically. During her undergraduate years, she was involved in the honors program, was on the Dean’s List, and was part of Iowa State’s Presidential Leadership group. While in veterinary school, she was inducted into Phi Zeta Kappa (Veterinary Medical Honors Society) and received the World Animal Care Foundation Award.
Dr. Burk is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Dental Society, the American Association of Feline Practitioners, and the American Heartworm Society. Dr. Burk maintains membership in the James O. Hansen Academy, by completion of at least five times the state requirement for continuing education to maintain her veterinary license. Her passion for learning has allowed her to develop professional interests in addition to canine and feline medicine and surgery, such as advanced pet dentistry, small exotic pet medicine, and laser surgery. She especially enjoys building relationships with her clients and patients so that she can provide the best possible care. She has a special interest and experience in brachycephalic dog breeds (Pugs, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, etc.), sporting dogs and hedgehogs. She also accepts dental referrals from other local veterinarians to treat complex dental cases and has assisted the faculty in teaching dentistry laboratories at the University of Minnesota for veterinary students. She enjoys mentoring and interacting with veterinary and pre-veterinary students. Dr. Burk has served on the committee for admission into veterinary school at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Burk embraces the Fear Free approach to veterinary care, and uses gentle patient handling and lots of treats to encourage a comfortable experience for each pet’s visit.
Dr. Burk, her husband, Joe, and sons Izaak and Ethan, share their home with two Chocolate Labrador Retrievers named Zora and Zeus and a Pug named Gidget. Her hobbies include traveling and reading.

Dr. Mark Lehnert

Dr. Mark Lehnert attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology in 1993. He then attended Utah State University, where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Biology.
Dr. Lehnert worked as a wildlife biologist in upstate New York for two years prior to returning to Minnesota and entering the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine. As a veterinary student, he received several academic awards and scholarships. Dr. Lehnert was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and has since developed an interest in veterinary dentistry. He has received advanced training in performing surgical tooth extractions, root canals, vital pulpotomies and other dental procedures. Dr. Lehnert is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Dental Society. Dr. Lehnert became co-owner of South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2012.
Dr. Lehnert’s outside hobbies and activities include photography, camping, canoeing, hunting, biking, and competing in triathlons. Dr. Lehnert, his wife Sarah, and their daughters, Audrey, Evelyn, and Corinne have a Labrador Retriever named Sawyer.

Dr. Rachel Samsel
Education: University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine
Pets: Lily, Sully
After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, Dr. Rachel Samsel attended the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine where she was awarded her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 2002. Dr. Samsel joined South Hyland Pet Hospital as an associate veterinarian in 2006.
In 2021, Dr. Samsel completed the Animal Hospice and Palliative Care Certification program. She is also a member of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association. Dr. Samsel is also certified in Fear Free handling through the Fear Free Pets® program.
Dr. Samsel, her husband Eric, and her twin daughters Emily and Megan enjoy traveling as well as spending time with their friends and family up north. They share their home with Lily, a Standard Poodle, River, a Shih Tzu, and Lewis the cat.

Dr. Hana Kazunas
Originally from Madison, WI, Dr. Hana Kazunas attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology in 2011. She worked at South Hyland Pet Hospital as a Client Service Representative for one year before beginning medical school. Dr. Kazunas graduated the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Pullman, WA on May 7, 2016 and joined our team on June 1st, 2016.
As a general practitioner, she looks forward to treating patients of a variety of species and has special interests in behavior and pain management strategies. Hana shares her home with her dog, Jordy (who was the first dog Hana spayed in veterinary school) and her cat, Karl (a former dumpster diving kitten). She enjoys horseback riding, baking, reading, cheering on the Green Bay Packers and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Emily Christenson
DVM
Education: Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine
Pets: Karmah (English Labrador)
Dr. Emily Christenson is a small animal general practitioner whose love of veterinary medicine started at a young age. Working as a veterinary/kennel assistant in middle school through college only fueled her passion for veterinary medicine. As an owner of a Labrador and being a previous owner of various other animals, Dr. Christenson understands the joys and concerns that pets can give their owners. Dr. Christenson strives to treat each patient as her own pet and loves developing relationships with clients and patients alike. It is her goal to try to return patients to owners in a better condition than she received them.
Dr. Christenson received her undergraduate degree from the University of Northwestern – St. Paul in 2016 with a double major in biology and Bible and a minor in chemistry. After Northwestern, Dr. Christenson attended Purdue University College of Veterinary medicine and graduated in 2020.
In her spare time, Dr. Christenson enjoys playing with her dog, Karm (a canine educator she adopted from Purdue), reading, crafting (sewing and crocheting), playing cello, and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Ellie Rassett

After working in wildlife research, Dr. Rassett transitioned to the veterinary field in 2015 and began working as a Client Coordinator and Veterinary Assistant. She graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in the spring of 2022 and joined the South Hyland Pet Hospital team in June of 2022. Dr. Rassett is passionate about providing high-quality medical care and reducing patient fear during veterinary visits. She is certified in Fear Free handling (Level 3) and in Feline Friendly practices. She also has extensive experience handling and working with exotics due to her background in wildlife medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Rassett is fascinated by animal behavior and especially enjoys working with fearful or “spicy” animals.
Dr. Rassett is also passionate about veterinary dentistry and loves performing dental procedures on dogs, cats, and small mammals. She strongly believes that high-quality, consistent dental care can drastically improve an animal’s quality of life and overall health. In her free time, Dr. Rassett enjoys reading, crafting, doing DIY projects, and spending time outdoors. She can often be found working on sewing projects, training her cats, and spending time with friends and family.

Alisa
Client Service Representative
Pets: Skye (American Eskimo mix), Kyle (Domestic Shorthair)
Alisa joined South Hyland Pet Hospital in 2007 as a Client Services Representative. She graduated from The Academy for Dog Trainers and received a Certificate of Training and Counseling (CTC). The Academy’s program is one of the most rigorous and advanced programs for dog behavior and training in the world. Alisa is the co-owner of The Dog Evolved, a dog training company based in Bloomington. The Dog Evolved uses only a reward-based, force-free approach to training basic manners, solving behavior problems, and addressing fear and aggression. The Dog Evolved provides one-on-one training as well as group classes for dogs of any age.
Also, Alisa is co-founder of the 501(c) 3 animal rescue, ACT V Rescue & Rehabilitation. She dedicates the majority of her time outside of South Hyland Pet Hospital to The Dog Evolved and ACT V Rescue. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Ron, Skye, an American Eskimo mix, and Kyle, a domestic shorthair.

Paige
Hospital Housekeeping and Maintenance Supervisor
Pets: Luna , Kemah & Mercer (Weimaraners)
Paige is an integral member of the SHPH team, serving as a dedicated Customer Service Representative (CSR). With a tenure of seven years at SHPH, Paige has developed a wealth of experience and knowledge in providing exceptional service to clients and their pets.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Paige finds joy in the company of her furry companions. At home, she shares her life with three Weimaraners named Luna, Kemah, and Mercer, who bring immense happiness and love to her household.
Paige’s passion for veterinary medicine stems from her genuine enjoyment of working with clients and their pets. She finds fulfillment in building strong relationships with clients and assisting them in ensuring the well-being of their furry family members. Paige’s compassionate nature and dedication make her an invaluable asset to the SHPH team.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Paige finds solace and inspiration in her hobbies. Gardening allows her to nurture and appreciate the beauty of nature, while her passion for home renovations allows her and her husband to bring new life to old treasures. Additionally, Paige enjoys engaging in various crafts, further showcasing her creativity and attention to detail.
When Paige and her husband seek relaxation and adventure, they often embark on hiking and camping trips with their cherished Weimaraners.
Through her unwavering commitment to client satisfaction, her love for animals, and her diverse array of interests and hobbies, Paige brings a unique and valuable perspective to the SHPH team. Becci

Becci is from Wisconsin originally. She ventured to the twin cities in 2000 and started pursuing her career working with animals in 2004. In her free time she likes to go camping and fishing. She also likes to garden. She lives with her rescue dog Shy, a 2 year old German Shepherd mix and 2 rescue cats Toby and Ada.


Kayla
Veterinary Assistant

Kayla is a valuable member of the SHPH team, where she holds the title of VA/CSR (Veterinary Assistant/Client Service Representative). She joined the SHPH team in August 2020 and has been an integral part of the organization ever since.
With an Associates of Applied Science degree in Animal Humane Officer Training, Kayla brings a solid foundation of knowledge and expertise to her role. Beyond her formal education, she has also acquired special certifications, including certification in Emergency Response through FEMA, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and growth.
At home, Kayla is accompanied by two wonderful pets. Milo, her beloved cat, and Charlee, her loyal Leopard Gecko. Their presence adds an extra layer of warmth and love to her home.
Working in veterinary medicine has been a rewarding experience for Kayla. Her favorite part of the job is meeting and caring for all the pets that visit the clinic. She has a particular fondness for exotic animals, with rabbits being a special interest. Kayla takes pride in providing the best possible care and attention to every animal she encounters.
When she’s not busy at work, Kayla indulges in various hobbies that bring her joy and relaxation. Playing the guitar, listening to music, and watching movies are some of her favorite ways to unwind. She also enjoys playing video games and exploring her creative side through building things and engaging in home improvement projects. Spending quality time with her partner and cherished pets is another important aspect of her life.
Kayla’s favorite animal is the shark, a magnificent creature that captures her imagination and fascination. Its strength and grace never fail to inspire her.
With her diverse interests, dedication to learning, and compassionate nature, Kayla brings a well-rounded perspective to her role at SHPH.

Eleanor
Veterinary Assistant

Pets: Winston (Boxer)
Eleanor joined the South Hyland team in May of 2022. She graduated from Creighton University located in Omaha, Nebraska, in May with a major in Marketing and a minor in Biology. Throughout college, she volunteered to walk dogs at the humane society and feed horses at a therapeutic riding barn for kids with disabilities. In her senior year, Eleanor completed an internship at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium working with penguins, puffins, and toucans. In her spare time, she enjoys painting and skiing.

Katie

Katie joined the SHPH team on April 15th, 2024, bringing her passion for animal care and dedication to creating positive experiences for both pets and their owners. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota, Katie’s educational background enriches her understanding of animal biology and health.
Outside of her professional role, Katie is a proud caregiver to two beloved cats, Rhubarb and Marcy (short for Marceline). Her nurturing nature extends beyond the workplace, fostering a loving environment for her furry companions at home.
In addition to her academic achievements, Katie holds a certification as a Nursing Assistant, demonstrating her commitment to providing exceptional care in various capacities. Her diverse skill set allows her to contribute effectively to the SHPH team, enhancing the quality of service provided to clients and their pets.
Passionate about veterinary medicine, Katie finds fulfillment in every aspect of her work, striving to make each visit a positive and comforting experience. Dawn is a valued member of the SHPH team, serving as a dedicated and experienced Certifed Veterinary Technician. With a wealth of knowledge and expertise, Dawn has been an integral part of our practice since November 2006.
Dawn’s educational background includes a degree in Veterinary Technology from the Medical Institute of Minnesota where she graduated in 2002. Her commitment to ongoing learning and professional development is evident through her diverse range of special certifications, which include canine obedience/behavior training, and certification in abdominal ultrasonography.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dawn is a pet lover at heart. At home, she shares her life with four beloved cats named Spook, Cora, Nimbus, and Nutmeg, as well as an adorable dog named Duncan. Her personal experiences as a pet owner enrich her understanding of the bond between humans and their animal companions, fueling her passion for providing exceptional care to all the animals she encounters.
Dawn’s favorite part about working in veterinary medicine is the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of both animals and their human families. She finds great joy in helping owners navigate their pet’s medical journey.
In her free time, Dawn indulges in creative outlets, including painting, crafts, and cooking. Her artistic pursuits allow her to unwind and tap into her innate creativity, bringing balance and inspiration to her life. Dawn also enjoys hiking, camping, and reading. She is also a Level 1 Archery Instructor!

Meet Jessica, a valuable member of our South Hyland team since January 2013. With a strong educational background in Veterinary Technology and Animal Science, Jessica brings extensive knowledge and expertise to our practice.
Having graduated from Argosy University and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jessica is well-versed in veterinary medicine and animal science. She excels in providing comprehensive care to our patients.
Jessica’s passion for wildlife and exotic animals led her to gain hands-on experience through an internship at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota. This experience has deepened her understanding of the unique challenges and specialized care required for these species.
During her free time, Jessica indulges in various hobbies. She is an avid reader and enjoys the world of cinema. She also cherishes spending time outdoors, exploring hiking trails and immersing herself in nature. As a sports enthusiast, she loves attending games and supporting her favorite teams.
At home, Jessica finds joy and companionship in her feline friend, Bibs. Her dedication to animals extends beyond the workplace, ensuring the highest quality of care for all.

Hannah
Certified Veterinary Technician
Education: Argosy University
Pets: Baker (Shih Tzu)
Hannah joined South Hyland Pet Hospital in May 2017. She graduated from Argosy University with her degree in Veterinary Technology in October 2017 and passed the VTNE to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. Following the completion of her technician internship with South Hyland, she stayed as a permanent member of the CVT team. Hannah has a Shih Tzu named Baker and is experienced in owning a variety of exotic pets.
While she tries not to play favorites, Hannah adores Shih Tzus and Chinchillas.
Having previously owned a Chinchilla named Queso, who was a patient at South Hyland, Hannah takes great pride in caring for them when they are in the hospital.
Other areas of the veterinary field Hannah enjoys working in are radiology, phlebotomy, anesthesia, and exotic medicine.

Grace graduated in December 2018 from Argosy University with a degree in Veterinary Technology. She completed her internship with us at South Hyland and has continued on as a CVT. Grace enjoys running labwork, dentistry, and getting to know her patients. In her free time, Grace enjoys throwing pottery on the wheel, biking and crackin’ jokes. She has one cat named Poppy, who loves to play fetch.

Jen is a dedicated member of our South Hyland team, bringing her passion for veterinary medicine and commitment to animal care. She graduated from Northwood Technical College with a degree in Veterinary Technology in August 2022.
As a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Jen has a special interest in dentistry and phlebotomy, demonstrating her enthusiasm for these areas of veterinary medicine. She continually seeks to expand her knowledge and expertise in these fields to provide the best possible care to our patients.
Beyond her work, Jen finds joy in spending quality time with animals. Her favorite animal is a cow, appreciating their gentle nature. She shares her home with Zoey, a lively German Shorthaired Pointer, and together they enjoy an active lifestyle filled with play and long walks.
Jen’s compassion, dedication, and pursuit of excellence in dentistry and phlebotomy contribute significantly to the exceptional care we provide to our animal patients.

Kara joined South Hyland Pet Hospital (SHPH) in October 2022 after earning her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology from North Dakota State University. At home, Kara shares her life with two adorable furballs: Ritz, a charming Tuxedo cat, and Buttercup, an affectionate Orange tabby cat.
Kara brings more than just her qualifications to the table—she’s also a certified AAFP Cat Friendly Veterinary Professional. Her passion for helping pet owners tackle new challenges with their furry companions shines through in her work. Whether it’s unraveling the mysteries of animal behavior, diving into pet nutrition, or ensuring healthy teeth with dentistry, Kara is always ready to lend a helping hand.
Outside of work, you might find Kara exploring the zoo, teaming up with her husband to play video games, or wrestling professionally on the weekends.

Certified Veterinary Technician

Baily became a valuable member of the South Hyland Pet Hospital (SHPH) team on July 10, 2023. She earned her Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Veterinary Technology from Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) in December 2022 and successfully passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) in March 2023.
At home, Baily enjoys the company of her dog, Denlow. In her veterinary career, she finds great joy in witnessing the growing bond between pets and their owners as they receive care over the years. Baily is particularly enthusiastic about client education, as well as surgery and dentistry.
Baily’s favorite animal is all baby animals! Her hobbies include savoring lake life on a pontoon, diving into a good book or series, and indulging in a refreshing nap.

Nicki

Nicki joined the SHPH team in May 2023 as a CVT intern. Her dedication, coupled with her love for animals, quickly earned her a full-time position as a valued Veterinary Technician.
With an educational foundation in both biology and veterinary technology, Nicki brings a unique blend of scientific knowledge and hands-on experience to her role. She graduated with an associate degree in veterinary technology in August 2023, adding to her existing bachelor’s degree in Biology from Minnesota State University, Mankato, which she obtained in May 2021 with an emphasis in zoology.
Beyond her educational and professional accomplishments, Nicki’s passion for animal care extends to her favorite part of working in veterinary medicine—interacting with clients and their beloved pets. She cherishes the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with clients and their animal companions, especially those who visit regularly. Her warm and caring demeanor makes every visit to the clinic a positive experience for both clients and their furry friends.
Nicki’s professional interests are as diverse as her personal life. She possesses a special affinity for working with exotics and pocket pets, demonstrating her commitment to providing top-notch care to animals of all shapes and sizes. Her dedication to ongoing learning and excellence shines through in her pursuit of knowledge in these specialized areas.
Outside of her role in the veterinary field, Nicki enjoys spending quality time with her family. Whether it’s biking through scenic routes or indulging in a good book while lounging in her hammock, she values every moment of relaxation and connection.

Meet Todd, a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) at SHPH. Todd joined our team in November of 2023, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in veterinary medicine.
Todd graduated from Ridgewater College in 2018 with an associate’s degree in veterinary technology. Since then, he has been dedicated to providing exceptional care to animals of all kinds.
At home, Todd shares his space with Stelle, his beloved domestic medium hair cat. Stelle brings joy and companionship to Todd’s life, making each day brighter.
Todd’s passion for veterinary medicine shines through in his work. His favorite part about working in the field is the opportunity to work with exotics, perform ultrasound procedures, and assist with dentistry cases. Todd’s special interests and passions drive him to continuously learn and grow in his role.
When he’s not caring for animals, Todd enjoys spending time outdoors biking and kayaking. He also has a competitive side, indulging in video games and trivia nights with friends.
Todd’s dedication to his work, coupled with his love for animals and zest for life, make him an invaluable member of the SHPH team. We’re fortunate to have him on board, enriching the lives of both our staff and furry patients alike.
