Internships/Externships & Job Shadows
South Hyland Pet Hospital values the importance of ongoing learning and education as essential to success in the veterinary field.
We invite students, from eighth grade through veterinary school, who are interested in or currently enrolled in animal science or veterinary programs, to apply for an opportunity to shadow or complete a school-required internship or externship with us.
To apply, students must submit an application and sit for an interview. Please note that due to demand, we may not be able to accommodate all requests.
Our primary internships/externships are designed for third- or fourth-year veterinary students, who have completed their undergraduate studies and are now enrolled in veterinary medical school. These are two-week unpaid rotations where students gain hands-on experience by conducting exams, administering treatments, and assisting in surgical procedures under direct supervision of our veterinarians.
We also offer paid or unpaid internships/externships for veterinary technology students in their final semester. These students are required to complete hundreds of hours in a clinical setting to qualify for graduation and apply to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam. These students go on to become Certified Veterinary Technicians in Minnesota.
Students from eighth grade and up may also apply for job shadowing opportunities. Due to liability concerns, job-shadow students cannot directly assist with patients or medical procedures. Instead, they observe and ask questions, gaining valuable exposure as they explore a potential career in veterinary medicine. This shadowing experience is unpaid.
Scheduling is typically arranged with 1-2 months’ notice to ensure we can accommodate each student’s required hours and benchmarks while balancing our staffing and other internship commitments.
